West Bromwich Albion add to Crystal Palace's woes

Goals from Saido Berahino and Gareth McAuley give West Bromwich Albion a 2-0 win over Crystal Palace.

Goals either side of half time have given West Bromwich Albion a much-needed 2-0 win over struggling Crystal Palace in the Premier League.

Both sides starting slowly, but Palace carved out an early goalscoring opportunity when Adlene Guedioura tested Boaz Myhill after latching onto a flick-on by Marouane Chamakh.

Neither team created anything else of substance in the final third from much of the first period, but the Baggies threatened from distance six minutes from the break, James Morrison shooting wide from 25 yards.

Both sides were forced into substitutions in the first period, with Adlene Guedioura going off injured for Palace and West Brom losing Billy Jones to a pulled hamstring.

West Brom edged their noses in front right on the stroke of half time when Saido Berahino met Stephane Sessegnon's cutback with a stinging volley that left Julian Speroni stranded.

Palace almost hit back just after the hour mark through substitute Jason Puncheon, whose deflected effort was tipped behind by Myhill.

The visitors threatened again in the 69th minute when Damien Delaney's nod-on was turned wide by an unmarked Chamakh, who should have done better.

West Brom left it late to kill off Palace, needing a 83rd-minute header from Gareth McAuley to put the game beyond the Eagles.
