Swansea City progress to League Cup semi-finals

Swansea book their place in the semi-final of the League Cup courtesy of a 1-0 win over Middlesbrough.

Swansea City have booked their place in the semi-finals of the League Cup after Sebastian Hines's own goal 10 minutes from time handed them a 1-0 win over Middlesbrough this evening.

Grant Leadbitter was the first to force the opposition keeper into a meaningful save when he latched on to George Friend's pull-back, but Gerhard Tremmel was equal to his effort.

The Swansea keeper was called upon again 10 minutes before the break, again denying Leadbitter who could have done better having been found by Faris Haroun's clever pass.

Boro continued to push for an opener in the second half and almost caught the hosts on the break, but Justin Hoyte lacked composure in the opposition box and fired his shot wide.

Swansea came within inches of breaking the deadlock with 15 minutes of the match remaining when Jonathan de Guzman's curling free kick was tipped onto the crossbar by Jason Steele.

De Guzman would have a hand in the opening goal just five minutes later, however, providing a cross that Hines inadvertently directed into his own net.

Boro looked to respond quickly, and almost found an equaliser with just two minutes left, but Tremmel tipped Friend's effort over.

Hines had a glorious chance to make up for his own goal from the resulting corner, but somehow the defender headed over from two yards out.
