Michael Laudrup: 'Errors will strengthen Jonjo Shelvey's character'

Manager Michael Laudrup insists that Jonjo Shelvey will emerge a stronger character from his error-strewn performance that potentially cost Swansea victory over Liverpool.

Swansea City manager Michael Laudrup believes that Jonjo Shelvey will emerge stronger from his hero-to-villain experience in their 2-2 draw with Liverpool on Monday night.

The 21-year-old netted against the club that sold him to Swansea this summer before making two mistakes that allowed the Reds to take a half-time lead at the Liberty Stadium.

However, he went on to assist Michu's equaliser after the break, and Laudrup has praised Shelvey's response to the errors, insisting that the midfielder will benefit from his difficult evening in the long term.

"When you do that, you go from heaven to hell in a couple of minutes after scoring a goal in a very important game for you after two minutes," Laudrup told Sky Sports News. "Then you give away a goal to the opponent, then another one when the ball is lost.

"But you have to remember that he is only 21 years old and I said to him 'come on, we have 45 more minutes, you have to learn from this, you have to pull yourself together'.

"I think he did great and I think after a second half like this, and we only talk about him, he will come out a lot stronger from this and I think his reaction to the first half in the second half was excellent."

Shelvey, who spent three years at Anfield before moving to Wales in a £5m switch, has apologised to the Swans fans for his blunders.
