Sunderland boss Gus Poyet looks to build on derby win

Sunderland boss Gus Poyet hopes that beating Newcastle United in the Tyne-Wear derby will be a season-changing moment for his side.

Sunderland head coach Gus Poyet has stated that the joy of beating Newcastle United in the Tyne-Wear derby must be a season-changing moment for his side.

The Black Cats made history at St James' Park on Sunday as Adam Johnson's last-minute winner consigned Newcastle to a record fourth successive derby defeat.

With Hull City to come on Boxing Day, Poyet hopes that the Black Cats can use the weekend's triumph to put together back-to-back wins for the first time this season.

"It has to be a big moment. We shouldn't be talking about one win. It has to be a change," he told the Shields Gazette.

"Confidence is a word that everyone uses a lot, but there is no bigger confidence boost than beating your biggest rivals in the last minute.

"Next week, everybody should be fully confident so we need to create and win our home game. That [the Hull game] could be one that changes the season. Not yesterday, but winning two or three in a row."

Sunderland are 14th in the Premier League table following the win.
