Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly contemplating a late move to sign Leeds United winger Daniel James on an initial loan deal with an obligation to buy.

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly contemplating a move for Leeds United winger Daniel James.

The 24-year-old moved to Elland Road from Manchester United last summer and ended the 2021-22 campaign with four goals and five assists in 35 appearances across all tournaments.

The Wales international has since featured in two of Leeds' opening three Premier League games of the new season, including a start in their impressive 3-0 home victory against Chelsea on Sunday.

However, it remains to be seen whether James will be a regular starter under Jesse Marsch, who has added both Brenden Aaronson and Luis Sinisterra to his ranks this summer.

James still has four years remaining on his contract with the West Yorkshire outfit, but journalist Alan Nixon claims that Spurs are considering a late move for the former Swansea City winger.

Nixon adds that Spurs are interested in taking James on an initial loan deal with a guaranteed permanent £20m option, but Leeds would prefer to receive the money upfront this summer.

A separate report from football.london claims that James has been identified by Tottenham as a potential replacement for Bryan Gil, who is wanted by Valencia.

The 21-year-old moved to North London from Sevilla last summer for an initial fee of around £21m, with Erik Lamela moving in the opposite direction as part of the deal.

Gil was unable to cement his place as a first-team regular for Spurs last season and featured only nine times in the Premier League – all as a substitute – before joining Valencia on loan for the second half of the 2021-22 campaign.

Journalist Fabrizio Romano claims that the Spaniard is set to complete a return to the La Liga club on a season-long loan deal with no option to buy.

Last week, Tottenham head coach Antonio Conte stated that the club will delve back into the transfer market if players leave the club before the September 1 deadline.

"This squad is this and if someone goes away then another has to come. This has to be very clear for everybody. Otherwise we stay with this squad and we continue our path with these players, this squad," the Italian told reporters.

"But if someone has to go away, along another must come. This is very clear for me, for the club, but we are totally agreed on this aspect."

Tottenham have made six permanent signings so far this summer, with Yves Bissouma, Richarlison, Ivan Perisic, Djed Spence, Fraser Forster and Destiny Udogie all arriving at the club, while Clement Lenglet has joined on loan from Barcelona.

In terms of outgoings, Steven Bergwijn, Cameron Carter-Vickers, Jack Clarke and Kion Etete have all left the club permanently, while Udogie, Tanguy Ndombele, Giovani Lo Celso, Joe Rodon, Dane Scarlett, Troy Parrott and Alfie Whiteman have all been sent out on loan.
