Jermain Defoe enjoyed England return

Spurs striker Jermain Defoe shares his relief at being back in the England side, while praising a "clever" Chile side following a 2-0 defeat at Wembley.

England striker Jermain Defoe has insisted that he was still able to enjoy a return to international action tonight, despite the Three Lions enduring a tough evening against Chile.

Barcelona forward Alexis Sanchez proved the difference between the two teams, scoring in both halves to ensure the South American outfit ran out 2-0 winners at Wembley.

Defoe played the final 25 minutes in his first international appearance since May and shared his relief at featuring in Roy Hodgson's plans again.

He told Sky Sports News: "On a personal level, it was nice to get out there and be involved, a long time coming.

"It was a difficult game, playing against a side who were technically so good and kept the ball so well. But it's important for the manager to see other players and give them an opportunity to show what they can do at this level.

"We played against a tough side, but on a personal note I enjoyed it. They are a clever side but there are positives we can take out of the game."

The 31-year-old will now have three days to press home claims for a place in Hodgson's next starting XI, with England back in action against Germany on Tuesday.
