South Africa have opened their Africa Cup of Nations campaign with a goalless draw against Cape Verde.

Cape Verde, in their first appearance in the tournament, made a tentative start against the host nation, struggling to keep possession of the ball in the opening stages of the match.

The first real chance fell to Cape Verde, when Platini dragged his shot wide from around 12 yards out.

The island nation had another chance just before the break, Nando attempting to set up Ryan Mendes, who blasted his effort high.

South Africa made a change at the interval, bringing on Leratu Chabangu, who made made the hosts look more threatening on the ball, but was unable to help them find a goal.

Bongani Khumalo had a late chance to win it for the host nation, but the captain's headed effort was stopped by the crossbar to seal the goalless draw.
