Rennes cruise to win over Toulouse

Rennes build on their win at Lyon with a comfortable 3-1 victory at home to Toulouse.

Rennes picked up a third win from four Ligue 1 outings this season by beating Toulouse 3-1 at Roazhon Park tonight.

Fresh from their shock 2-1 win at Lyon last week, Rennes were brought back down to earth within five minutes of kickoff when Martin Braithwaite opened the scoring.

Philippe Montanier's side responded well and almost levelled up minutes later Sylvain Armand headed Kamil Grosicki's teasing cross just wide of the post.

It was a sign of things to come as the hosts did level up - albeit in fortuitious fashion - shortly after when Steeve Yago bundled the ball into his own net.

Braithwaite and Somalia both spurned good chances in the final quarter of the half as Toulouse went into the second period in the ascendancy.

However, it was the hosts who emerged from the break in the better form, as Mauro Goicoechea pulled off a smart save early on to keep out Armand.

Goicoechea denied Armand once more on 67 minutes, this time from 12 yards with a penalty that the keeper conceded, but the Rennes striker was on hand to tuck home the rebound.

Braithwaite almost rescued a point when his curling effort whistled wide of the post late on, before the hosts consolidated the win in the dying stages through Giovanni Sio.
