Steve Cotterill emerges as the leading contender to take over at Nottingham Forest.

Steve Cotterill is the man that the Nottingham Forest board want to become their new manager, according to Sky Sports News.

Forest have targeted the current Portsmouth boss following Steve McClaren's decision to step down from his position at the City Ground last week.

A number of names, including Roy Keane, Nigel Clough and Kevin MacDonald have been linked with the post, but it now appears that Cotterill is the leading contender.

The 47-year-old, who has previously managed Forest's rivals Notts County, took over Pompey in 2010 charged with the task of stabilising a club that was suffering with a number of financial problems following relegation from the Premier League.

Pompey would be due compensation should Forest tempt Cotterill away from Fratton Park.
