Charity: 'Challenge to raise £92,000 for motor neurone disease research has passed halfway'

Former Bury, Burnley and Swansea player Len Johnrose has led the campaign.

A challenge seeking to raise £92,000 for motor neurone disease research has passed the halfway mark, a charity supporting it has said.

Former Bury, Burnley and Swansea player Len Johnrose has led the Project 92 campaign to raise funds for the MND Association, with celebrities taking on the 'ice foot challenge'.

Those set the challenge – who so far include Good Morning Britain presenter Charlotte Hawkins, Countryfile's Helen Skelton and former Manchester United forward Dion Dublin – must put their feet in a bucket of iced water for 92 seconds.

In total £46,064 has been raised so far. Those who take part in the #IceFoot92 challenge are asked to donate £10 to the MND Association by texting MNDLEN to 70085 and to nominate three friends, relatives or colleagues.

Johnrose, who was diagnosed with MND in 2017 and is confined to a wheelchair, said: "As a player, I'd ice foot injuries. I'm asking people to stand in a bucket of ice water for 92 seconds – one second for each club in the league – I can promise you it's pure hell.

"If you manage it you get to nominate your mates so it's a great chance to set them up! And if you don't – you have to pay a penalty and donate anyway."
