Steve McClaren: 'Rob Elliot was magnificent'

Newcastle United manager Steve McClaren says that the performance of goalkeeper Rob Elliot was pivotal as the Magpies registered a 1-0 win at Bournemouth.

Newcastle United manager Steve McClaren has described the performance of goalkeeper Rob Elliot as "magnificent" after the Magpies beat Bournemouth 1-0 in the Premier League.

Ayoze Perez scored the only goal of the game on the South Coast, but McClaren was full of praise for the Republic of Ireland international, who had been a doubt for the game with a thigh problem.

The 54-year-old told BT Sport: "We were worried after last week's game but he has trained over the last couple of days. He was magnificent but that is what you need sometimes.

"You can't go away from home all the time and play the type of football that you want to. Sometimes you have to dig in and sometimes there are defining moments. They are usually blocks, headers and saves, and two great saves from Rob kept us in the game and got us the win."

Newcastle have moved into 16th position in the standings after registering just their second win of the campaign.
