Spain fall to Netherlands defeat

Goals from Stefan de Vrij and Davey Klaassen give the Netherlands a 2-0 win over Spain in an international friendly.

Goals from Stefan de Vrij and Davey Klaassen gave the Netherlands a 2-0 win over Spain in an international friendly this evening.

The home side took the lead on 13 minutes when De Vrij angled a header into the bottom after a cross from Wesley Sneijder, and it took Oranje just three minutes to double their advantage.

Klaassen made it 2-0 when he converted from close range at the second attempt after an initial save from Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea.

Spain's best chance of the first half arrived after the half-hour mark, but Dutch goalkeeper Kenneth Vermeer did well to block Pedro's effort with the Barcelona forward through on goal.

La Roja had a good chance to reduce the arrears six minutes into the second period, but Cesc Fabregas failed to make contact from Juan Bernat's cross, before the Netherlands responded quickly.

Bruno Martins Indi could only see his header bounce over the bar before Memphis Depay forced De Gea into a smart save before the hour mark.

Barcelona defender Gerard Pique went close with a curling free kick just after the hour mark that curled narrowly past the post.

David Silva thought that he had halved the deficit for Spain, but the Manchester City playmaker's close-range effort was disallowed for offside.

Guus Hiddink's side should have wrapped the game up inside the last 10 minutes but Georginio Wijnaldum could only shoot into the side-netting after good work from Depay in the build-up.
