Motherwell have received a major boost after midfielder David Turnbull rejected "more lucrative" opportunities to extend his contract with his boyhood heroes.

The 19-year-old had been linked with the likes of Southampton and Swansea and his representatives rejected a series of contract offers from the Fir Park club.

Turnbull was free to talk to other clubs and could have left for training compensation in the summer but he has signed a new deal which ties him to Motherwell until the summer of 2021.

The Lanarkshire teenager has scored five goals in 13 starts this season and made himself a key player in recent months.

Manager Stephen Robinson told the club's official website: "It's to his credit that he has rejected the possibility of a more to a bigger or so-called more lucrative club in favour of continuing his development here, playing first-team football.

"He's made a brilliant start to his Motherwell career, but he also knows that he can get even better if he continues to work hard and continues to learn.

"He's joined other academy graduates such as Allan Campbell, Chris Cadden and Jake Hastie who are now imposing themselves on the first team.

"The positive news for the club is that we have others hot on their heels with the likes of Barry Maguire, Adam Livingstone, James Scott and more close to making their own impact."

Turnbull has been with Motherwell since he was nine.

He said: "I am really pleased to get this deal over the line and to have my immediate future sorted.

"I can kick on now, keep getting games under my belt, keep trying to do what I'm doing and hopefully it could be the start of something.

"I think I've made a decent start, but I know I've got a lot to learn and the place for me to do that is at Motherwell."
