Rio Ferdinand announces retirement from football at 36

Former England and Manchester United centre-back Rio Ferdinand announces his retirement from professional football at the age of 36.

Former England centre-back Rio Ferdinand has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 36.

The defender has decided not to pursue another contract after being released by Queens Park Rangers earlier this week following one season in West London.

He confirmed his decision not to continue playing on BT Sport this afternoon.

In a 19-year career, Ferdinand played for West Ham United, Leeds United, Manchester United and QPR, enjoying his most successful spell in Manchester from 2002 to 2014.

He won six Premier League titles, one FA Cup, three League Cups and one Champions League during his time with the Red Devils.

Ferdinand also turned out 81 times for England, scoring three goals for his country.

He recently had to take time away from the game as his wife Rebecca fell ill with cancer and passed away.
