Manchester United 'to trigger Jesse Lingard contract extension'

Manchester United are reportedly planning to trigger a one-year extension in Jesse Lingard's contract to avoid losing him on a free transfer.

Manchester United will reportedly trigger an extension clause in Jesse Lingard's contract to keep him at the club until 2022.

The 28-year-old has only been included in two matchday squads in the Premier League so far this season and is yet to be handed a single minute of top-flight action in 2020-21.

Lingard's current contract expires at the end of this season and he will be free to discuss terms over a summer transfer away from Old Trafford from the beginning of January.

However, the Daily Mail reports that Man United will trigger the one-year extension clause in his current deal to prevent him from leaving for free at the end of this season.

Lingard has been linked with moves to the likes of Celtic, Rangers and Sheffield United in recent weeks and could still leave Old Trafford on loan in January.

However, the Red Devils are keen to recoup a transfer fee for their homegrown talent if they sell him on a permanent basis in 2021.

Lingard has been at Man United since the age of eight, making more than 200 first-team appearances for the club.
