David Gill expects new Wayne Rooney deal

Manchester United's former chief executive David Gill expects the champions to offer Wayne Rooney a contract extension.

Former Manchester United chief executive David Gill has stated his belief that the club will soon offer Wayne Rooney a new contract.

The striker, who was said to have been keen on a move to Chelsea during the summer, has just under two years left to run on his current deal at Old Trafford.

His recent performances have resulted in reports that the Premier League champions are keen to tie down the England international to extended terms and Gill, who is now a club director, believes that talks could be in the offing.

"Without doubt, I'm sure they would look at it. We had an approach to dealing with players' contracts at Manchester United that's stood us in good stead for many years and I'm sure that Ed [Woodward] and David [Moyes] and the owners will continue with that policy," Gill told BBC Radio 5 Live.

Rooney, 27, joined the Red Devils from Everton in the summer of 2004.
