Louis van Gaal 'deeply frustrated' with Manchester United draw at Chelsea

Louis van Gaal believes that Manchester United "played a superb game" until Diego Costa's last-gasp leveller for Chelsea in Sunday's Premier League match.

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has expressed his disappointment after watching his side concede in added time and draw 1-1 at Chelsea in the Premier League this evening.

United were on top for large parts of the match at Stamford Bridge and Jesse Lingard's 61st-minute strike appeared to be the winner until Diego Costa rolled home in the 91st minute to rescue the hosts a point.

When asked for his feelings after the match, Van Gaal told Sky Sports News: "Deep frustration because we were the better team. Again. And we didn't win. We had the better chances but we didn't win.

"We played a superb game until the last quarter. Then we did not keep the ball in the way I think we have to. Then, we were unlucky and we get a goal against us. It is unbelievable. We don't reward ourselves.

"This is also because Chelsea is pushing with long balls and more aggression but nevertheless you have to keep the ball and be composed when you defend; you are not kicking the ball way without any meaning. Also we could have scored again after the first goal but you don't reward yourselves. When you play such a game against a team like Chelsea, you have to reward yourself."

Van Gaal was angry with the officials upon the full-time whistle and suggested that his team were unfairly treated both at the end of the first half and second half because his side was on the attack.

"The [injury] time was already over, the six minutes, and then he let [Chelsea] kick the corner and when we had a free pitch for us he whistles.

"He did that also in the first half. I think you cannot do that. Otherwise, you don't let him kick the corner, because I don't think that is fair for two teams."

Had United held out, they would have closed to within four points of neighbours Manchester City in the top four, but they are two wins behind the Citizens in fifth.
