Former Crystal Palace owner Simon Jordan has suggested that Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho should not be lambasted for his treatment of Luke Shaw.

The Portuguese coach has regularly criticised the left-back over the last two seasons, questioning his dedication and fitness.

At the weekend, Mourinho singled out Shaw, claiming that he was unhappy with the England international's performance in the Red Devils' FA Cup quarter-final victory over Brighton & Hove Albion.

"If you want characters, whether it's sport or business, you praise them and you criticise them in equal measure and build their character, and Luke Shaw, since he walked in that door has been overweight for [Louis] van Gaal," Jordan told talkSPORT.

"Players like [Wilfried] Zaha got booted out because they weren't fit for purpose at Man United, Shaw stayed there and yet still he finds himself as a bit player.

"Whilst you don't like seeing people being singled out by definition, I'm not sure that I am on Mourinho's back here. This is a poor Man United group of players that did not react to a poor performance on Wednesday [in the Champions League]."

Reports have emerged claiming that United's hierarchy are frustrated with Mourinho's treatment of Shaw.
