Yaya Toure slams Confederation after African Football of the Year snub

Yaya Toure says that the African Football Confederation is "pathetic" after he missed out on winning his fifth consecutive African Footballer of the Year trophy.

Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure has hit out angrily after missing out on being named African Footballer of the Year.

The Ivory Coast international was in line to claim his fifth consecutive title by the Confederation of African Football, but instead, Borussia Dortmund forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was handed the award.

Aubameyang received 143 points from the panel, which was made up of coaches and technical directors, while Toure finished in second place with 136 points.

At the time of the announcement, Toure praised his counterpart for beating him to the gong, but in an interview with French radio station RFI, the midfielder did not seem to take the decision well.

"I'm very, very disappointed," Toure reportedly told the station. "It's sad to see Africa react this way, that they don't think African achievements are important.

"I think this is what brings shame to Africa, because to act in that way is indecent, but what can we do about it? Us Africans, we don't show that Africa is important in our eyes. We favour more what's abroad than our own continent. That is pathetic.

"As I've been told many times, you can't take care of Africa too much because Africa will be the first to let you down."

Swansea City's Andre Ayew came third with 112 points.
