Mamadou Sakho: 'Defensive competition is good for Liverpool'

Liverpool defender Mamadou Sakho believes that the strength in depth at the centre of defence is healthy for the team.

Liverpool defender Mamadou Sakho has said that he welcomes the fierce competition in the centre of defence at Anfield.

Sakho joined the Reds on transfer deadline day for a reported £15m from Paris Saint-Germain along with fellow defender Tiago Ilori, while Kolo Toure signed on a free transfer from Manchester City earlier on in the summer.

Jamie Carragher retired at the end of last season, but the Reds retained Daniel Agger and Martin Skrtel, and Sakho believes that the strength in depth is a good thing.

"At Liverpool, there are some really good players in my position but this competition is healthy," Sakho told Le Parisien.

"I am learning and I listen to the instructions of the coach. It's funny, [manager Brendan Rodgers] calls me 'Killer' on the training ground. I try to adapt myself to my teammates.

"As for the football, I am not experienced [in English football] in the same way [as in France]."

Sakho also recently said that he left PSG with a view to getting in France's World Cup squad.
