Brendan Rodgers explains Simon Mignolet absence

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers explains why Simon Mignolet was left out of their 3-0 defeat to Manchester United on Sunday.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has explained his decision to drop Simon Mignolet from the side that was beaten 3-0 by Manchester United on Sunday.

The Belgian goalkeeper was replaced by Brad Jones for the visit to Old Trafford, and Rodgers has revealed that Mignolet faces an "indefinite period" on the substitutes' bench.

The Northern Irishman told reporters after the game: "I said to Simon [he will be out] for an indefinite period. It is something that can happen to keepers, taking them out of the firing line to give them time to reflect.

"Brad is very experienced and was always going to play in the [League Cup quarter-final against] Bournemouth [on Wednesday].

"He has played in a lot of games and Brad in my first year came in and did very well."

Mignolet became the Reds' most expensive keeper of all time when they paid Sunderland around £9m for the shot-stopper back in the summer of 2013.
