A Qatari consortium is reportedly seriously interested in buying Liverpool, with current owners Fenway Sports Group seeking over £4bn for an outright sale.

A Qatari consortium is seriously interested in purchasing Liverpool, according to reports from the nation.

Current owners Fenway Sports Group (FSG) announced that they were looking for new investment in November, although whether that comes in the form of a full takeover or partial sale remains to be seen.

Qatari journalist Mohammed Saeed Alkaabi claims that his homeland are leading the race to be the future owners of the Anfield club.

The Qatar-based reporter told The Anfield Talk: "Qatar are giving priority to the acquisition of Liverpool Football Club and are seriously interested but the deal is not complete at this present moment."

The group that is interested is reportedly a private company, but despite not being state-owned, it still has close links to the country's ruling family.

FSG are understood to want in excess of £4bn to sell the club outright, a huge profit on the approximately £300m that they paid in 2010.
