Roy Hodgson "disappointed" with referee

England manager Roy Hodgson expresses his disappointment at the performance of referee Cuneyt Cakir during his side's 1-1 draw with Ukraine at Wembley.

England manager Roy Hodgson has expressed his disappointment at the standard of officiating during his side's 1-1 draw with Ukraine.

The Three Lions ended the match with 10 men, after captain Steven Gerrard was sent off by Turkish referee Cuneyt Cakir with two minutes remaining.

Jermain Defoe had thought that he had given the hosts the lead on 10 minutes, but his fine solo goal was ruled out for an apparent foul on Andriy Yarmolenko.

Yevhen Konoplianka then fired Ukraine in front with a long-range strike late in the first half, before Frank Lampard equalised from the penalty spot three minutes from time.

"I am disappointed," said Hodgson. "There won't be too many people watching the game that would disagree with me when I say some of the yellow cards were extremely harsh.

"Steven Gerrard was very unfortunate to get sent off. I would be amazed if he made two tackles during that game, let alone two bookable offences.

"Luckily we got our reward and, who knows, if Steven Gerrard had managed to stay on the pitch we might have got a winner."

Gerrard is the 12th England player to have been sent off in a senior international.
