England and the Republic of Ireland are now unlikely to play a friendly match in May due to a potential meeting at Euro 2012.

The proposed international friendly between England and the Republic of Ireland in preparation for Euro 2012 is now "highly unlikely" to be played.

Both Football Associations were reportedly keen for a match between the two nations to be played in May.

However, the sides could now meet in the quarter-final of Euro 2012 and as a result the English FA are said to be uncertain regarding the fixture.

"The England game is looking less likely for May," FAI chief executive John Delaney told Sunshine FM.

"The fact from the English perspective that we could play them in the quarter-finals, they're not that keen to do it in May, but they're keen to come sooner rather than later after that.

"But it's highly unlikely that it would be May now."

The two teams have not met since 1995, when England fans rioted and caused the game to be abandoned.
