Javier Zanetti: 'Lionel Messi will win the World Cup'

Former Argentina great Javier Zanetti tips Lionel Messi to captain his side to World Cup victory in Brazil.

Argentina legend Javier Zanetti has backed Lionel Messi to captain his national side to a World Cup triumph.

Despite his exploits for Barcelona, the four-time Ballon d'Or winner has been frequently criticised for his inability to translate his club form onto the international stage.

However, Zanetti, who played 145 times for La Albiceleste, thinks that Messi will lead Argentina to glory in Brazil.

The Daily Mail quotes him as saying: "I can see him having an outstanding World Cup. This stage is made for him. I really do think this could be our time and we will see Lionel lifting the trophy.

"He has proved himself captain in the best possible way by inspiring all around him and leading by example, and that is going to stand us in good stead."

Argentina begin their campaign against Bosnia on Sunday.
