Luis Garcia announces retirement

Former Spanish international Luis Garcia retires from professional football.

Former Spanish international Luis Garcia has announced his retirement from professional football.

The 35-year-old, who has represented the likes of Barcelona, Atletico Madrid and Liverpool during a successful playing career, had been without a club since leaving Mexican side Pumas UNAM at the end of last season.

"It's time. It's not easy for any and inevitable for all. I have had many years doing what fascinates me, great times spent and the opportunity to fulfil the dreams I had as a kid," he said in a statement. "Today I retire as a professional footballer. I thank the teams who had interest in me in recent weeks but I think it's time to end this important chapter in my life and move to the next page.

"To each and every one of the people who have been with me over the 17 years of my career, have helped me and supported me at every stage I have lived, even if I have not mentioned you I am forever grateful."

"And last but not least the fans. To all who have followed me over the years, always with good intentions, always encouraging me and motivating me in every game and to be a better player every day. Thank you all for being part of the history of my career and welcome to the next page."

Garcia also made 20 appearances for his country, scoring four times in the process.
