Phil Taylor begins the defence of his Grand Slam of Darts title with a 5-1 victory over Co Stompe.

Phil Taylor has begun his defence of his Grand Slam of Darts title with a comfortable 5-1 win over Co Stompe.

The 15-time world champion shared the opening two legs with his Dutch opponent before powering to victory with an average of 100.38.

Mark Webster came out on top in the other match of Group A, beating Scott Waites 5-3.

World Grand Prix winner Michael van Gerwen averaged 103 as he powered to a 5-2 win over Steve Beaton, while Robert Thornton thrashed Ted Hankey 5-0.

Arron Monk caused the upset of the night with a 5-1 triumph over James Wade to top Group C alongside Mervyn King, who beat Jan Dekker by the same scoreline.

Australia's Simon Whitlock saw off youngster James Hubbard 5-2 while Kevin Painter edged out Dean Winstanley 5-4 in the opening match of the tournament.
