Former England batsman Kevin Pietersen has praised South Africa captain Graeme Smith after learning of his decision to retire from the international game.

Smith, who has led the Proteas for more than a decade, announced yesterday that he will step down after his nation's third Test against Australia.

The 33-year-old explained that he wants to spend more time with his family after revealing that he began considering his future following ankle surgery in April last year.

Following the news, Pietersen wrote on Twitter: "Hearing huge news out of SA. @GraemeSmith49 is retiring! For what he has done for SA cricket - the man is a legend! Congrats my Surrey BFF!"

Cricket South Africa expressed their "surprise" at Smith's decision following the announcement.
