Pakistan beat Afghanistan in Asia Cup

Pakistan beat Afghanistan by 72 runs in their Asia Cup match in Fatullah.

Pakistan have moved to the top of the Asia Cup table after beating Afghanistan by 72 runs in Fatullah.

Pakistan were put in to bat first and made 248-8 from their 50 overs, but Afghanistan failed to chase down that total as they were bowled out for 176 after 47 overs.

Pakistan got their innings off to a solid start, with Sharjeel Khan and Ahmed Shahzad putting on an opening partnership of 55.

Shahzad scored 50 before he was dismissed by Samiullah Shenwari, but the quick wickets of Khan, Mohammad Hafeez and Misbah-ul-Haq left them struggling on 89-4.

Umar Akmal swung the match back in Pakistan's favour with a knock of 102 off 89 balls, but Anwar Ali was the only other batsman to get past 20 runs.

Afghanistan suffered an early blow in their run chase when Mohammad Shahzad was dismissed for nine by Umar Gul, but a partnership between Noor Ali Zadran (44) and Asghar Stanikzai (40) steadied matters.

Nawroz Mangal contributed with a knock of 35 off 57 deliveries, but Afghanistan lost their final five wickets for just 25 runs to hand Pakistan victory.

Hafeez took three wickets for Pakistan, while Gul and Saeed Ajmal claimed two each.
