West Indies have secured a nine-wicket victory against New Zealand in the first Test thanks largely to a five-wicket haul from Kemar Roach.

The tourists looked a good bet for a draw after resuming their second innings on 199-3 but the Black Caps lost their last seven wickets for fewer than 60 runs after a devastating spell of fast bowling from Roach.

Ross Taylor, Kane Williamson and Neil Wagner were all removed by Roach to put the hosts in charge but he was well supported by Ravi Rampaul.

Kruger van Wyk was the last batsman dismissed for a fluent 30, becoming Roach's fifth victim in the process.

West Indies' openers started brilliantly, with Chris Gayle racing to his half century and finishing unbeaten on 64 in an innings that included 10 boundaries.

Kieran Powell (30) was the only batsman dismissed in the run chase and it was left to Assad Fudadin (7*) to secure victory at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium.
