England make a slow, but solid, start in the opening session of the first Test match with New Zealand.

England have moved to 56-1 at lunch against New Zealand after the opening session of the first Test match at Lord's.

After winning the toss and electing to bat, Cook and Compton struggled to find any fluency as the New Zealand bowlers found a bit of swing with the new ball.

The England openers had taken the total to 43 before the tourists picked up their first wicket when Compton was caught off the bowling of Bruce Martin.

Martin missed an opportunity to dismiss Jonathan Trott, but he failed to hold on to a caught-and-bowled chance, as England moved to 56-1 at the end of the session.
