Jessica Ennis-Hill takes heptathlon lead ahead of Katarina Johnson-Thompson

Jessica Ennis-Hill finishes second behind Katarina Johnson-Thompson in the high jump but takes a 30-point lead ahead of her British rival after two heptathlon events.

Jessica Ennis-Hill has claimed the overall lead in the heptathlon after finishing behind British rival Katarina Johnson-Thompson in the high jump.

A jump of 1.86m was enough to give Ennis-Hill 2,192 points after two events, and she leads her teammate by 30 points ahead of the shot put later on Saturday.

Johnson-Thompson overcame troubles with her run-up to claim victory in the high jump, while Ennis-Hill was just one place further back as the Olympic champion followed a second-place finish in the 100m hurdles with an impressive display.

An inconsistent performance from Johnson-Thompson started with two failed jumps at 1.80m, but long debates with her coach and minor adjustments to the approach helped the 22-year-old improve enough to eventually pass 1.90m.

Despite heading into the event as firm favourite, three failures at 1.92m ensured that it was mixed feelings for Johnson-Thompson.
