British athlete Hannah England claimed a silver medal for her country in the 1500m race in the World Championships.

The 24-year-old, who has never competed in a senior championship prior to Daegu, came in 0.28 seconds behind winner Jenny Berringer-Simpson of the USA.

"I am so excited," England told Channel 4. "I felt there was nothing to lose and was so calm.

"When I hit the home straight, I saw the others tying up and just went for it. I felt good all the way into it.

"It was such a weight off just to make the final. I am so happy to have done it for the girls who are coming through."

Natalia Rodriquez won bronze for Spain while defending champion Maryam Yusuf Jamal came in last place after failing to make a push in the final lap.

Meanwhile, Dai Greene has won the first gold medal for Britain after finishing victorious in the men’s 400m hurdles.
