Philadelphia Eagles confirm Evan Mathis release

The Philadelphia Eagles announce that they have released offensive lineman Evan Mathis from their roster after being unable to trade the 33-year-old.

The Philadelphia Eagles have confirmed that they have released offensive lineman Evan Mathis.

The 33-year-old outlined his desire to leave the club after being unhappy with his contract situation, with the Eagles unwilling to offer him an improved deal.

Chip Kelly's men explored trade options for Mathis, and although there was speculation, no team came forward with an offer.

As a result, the Eagles have taken the decision to cut the guard from their roster, leaving him free to sign with any of the 31 teams in the NFL.

"We have never had an offer for Evan so there's nothing to take," Kelly told reporters. "Evan's been available to trade for two years now and we've never had an offer for him.

"And that's through their agent and him. They've asked us if he can renegotiate a contract and see what he can get and we've obliged him with that, but we've never had an offer on him."

Mathis was voted to the Pro Bowl for his displays in the 2013 and 2014 seasons.
