Johnny Manziel: 'I need to earn respect'

New Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel acknowledges that he will need to earn the respect of his teammates despite his big reputation.

New Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel has acknowledged that he will need to earn the respect of his teammates.

Manziel was one of the highest-profile players involved in this year's Draft, although he was only chosen with the 22nd overall pick having been predicted by many to be among the first selected.

The 21-year-old was nicknamed 'Johnny Football' during his college career and drew widespread media interest in the build-up to the Draft, but he insists that he is now trying to focus solely on matters on the field.

"I'm a rookie coming in, low guy on the totem pole. I need to show these guys with actions to earn their respect," Manziel told reporters.

"I think I'm Johnny Manziel. Johnny Football is what I am in the media and I'm accepting of it, but at the same time I know who I am. It doesn't make me lose sleep at night.

"I don't think it could be more than what I have imagined in my head. Going into it expecting madness. If it is, it is. If it's not, we'll deal with it."

The Browns also drafted cornerback Justin Gilbert in the first round, choosing him with the eighth overall pick.
