President Barack Obama has wished the USA Olympic team well, telling the athletes that they 'inspire us.'

The Democrat leader recorded a message for Team USA for the Today show on NBC, the American network with exclusive Olympic broadcasting rights.

"Hello Team USA, I just want to say congratulations and good luck to everyone representing the red, white, and blue at the Winter Olympics and Paralympic games this year. We couldn't be prouder of you and we can't wait to see what you accomplish in the next few weeks," Obama said in his message.

The American president previously explained that performing in the Olympics is about "how good you are regardless of where you come from, what you look like, who you love".
