Nicky Gooch: 'Elise Christie has to cope with the pressure'

Great Britain short track speed skating coach Nicky Gooch believes that Elise Christie will have to cope with the pressure to perform well in the 1,000m in Sochi.

Great Britain short track speed skating coach Nicky Gooch feels that Elise Christie will have to handle the pressure of expectations on her when she competes for the third time in Sochi.

Christie has had a unfortunate experience so far in her Winter Olympics, as she was stripped of a silver medal in the 500m and was also disqualified in the 1,500m.

Gooch told The Guardian: "There is a lot of expectation to perform in this above other distances, and with other races going the way they have it creates more pressure.

"This is what it is to be an elite athlete. You have to deal with these things. When she's out there and racing, if we get the mind-set right, we will be fine."

The 23-year-old gets her campaign in the 1,000m underway later today.
