Japan upstage Russia in figure skating event

Japanese teenage figure skater Yuzuru Hanyu overshadows home athlete Evgeni Plushenko with a dazzling display in the figure skating event.

Japanese figure skater Yuzuru Hanyu has put in a dazzling display to upstage Russian star Evgeni Plushenko.

Plushenko, who picked up a gold medal in Turin eight years ago, scored an impressive 91.39, but was overtaken by teenager Hanyu who scored an even better 97.8 in Thursday's event.

"It is so difficult skating an Olympics at home," Plushenko told reporters. "People are waiting for something incredible to happen."

Elsewhere, Team GB lie in 10th position after Stacey Kemp and David King had a fall.
