Heather Watson through to second round at Rio Olympics

Great Britain's Heather Watson progresses through to the second round of the Rio Olympics with a three-set victory over China's Peng Shuai.

Great Britain's Heather Watson has booked her place in the second round of the Rio Olympics courtesy of a three-set win over China's Peng Shuai.

The world number 67 took two-and-a-half hours to overcome her opponent 6-4 (5)6-7 6-3 and progress through in Brazil.

Watson appeared to be cruising to victory in the opening set when she won four of the first five games, but Peng broke back to prevent the Brit from having the chance to serve for the set.

It was only a temporary reprieve, though, and Watson was able to serve out the set to gain control of the contest.

Two breaks apiece saw the second set go all the way to a tie-break, with Watson unable to serve out the set at 6-5, and that proved to be costly as the world number 264 levelled things up with a 7-5 triumph in the breaker.

That took the match to a decider, and the third set was a seesaw affair that saw only three of the opening eight games go with serve.

It was Watson who came out on top, but having seen two match points slip away she then had to save two more break points before finally wrapping up the win at the third time of asking.
