Juan Monaco advances as Milos Raonic retires in Shanghai Masters second round

Raonic retires, Monaco through

Eighth seed Milos Raonic was forced to retire from his Shanghai Masters second-round encounter against Juan Monaco this afternoon.

The Canadian was losing 5-2 in the first set when he prematurely shook hands and conceded to Argentina's Monaco.

His withdrawal is potentially good news for British number one Andy Murray, who is just behind Raonic in the qualification standings for the ATP World Tour Finals in London.

The top eight qualify for the curtain-closer at the O2 Arena and Murray currently lies in ninth place. The Scot is through to the third round after he beat Jerzy Janowicz earlier today.

As for Monaco, he goes through to face Russia's Mikhail Youzhny in the last 16.
