Radek Stepanek ousts Nicolas Almagro in Montreal

Radek Stepanek beats world number 14 Nicolas Almagro in three sets in the first round of the Rogers Cup in Montreal.

Radek Stepanek has knocked out world number 14 Nicolas Almagro in the first round of the Rogers Cup in Montreal.

The Czech world number 51 came through a tough opening set 6-3, but he missed the chance to serve out the match in the second as Almagro fought back to take the tie-break 7-4.

However, Stepanek battled through the decider 6-3 and clinched the match.

The veteran will now take on either Canadian wildcard Vasek Pospisil or American John Isner for a spot in round three.
