Result: Jo-Wilfried Tsonga defeats Fabio Fognini

France’s Jo-Wilfried Tsonga advances to the second round of the Rogers Cup after he defeated Fabio Fognini 6-4, 7-6 on Monday.

The 13th seed, who faced the Italian on Centre Court, battled through a second set tie-break to take the victory.

Though he couldn’t find the win, Fognini made the day’s highlight reel with a flashy back-court winner from between the legs.

Tsonga will meet Bernard Tomic in the second round after the Australian teenager beat Taiwan’s Lu Yen-hsun 7-6 6-3.
