Tommy Haas beats David Goffin 7-6(4) 6-3 in the first round of the Rogers Cup in Montreal.

Tommy Haas has beaten David Goffin in straight sets to reach the second round of the Rogers Cup in Montreal.

The young Belgian saved three break points in the first set, which the German veteran eventually won 7-4 in the tie-break.

That seemed to break Goffin's resistance, as Haas broke twice in the second set and won 16 of 19 points on his first serve to take it 6-3 and seal the victory.

The 35-year-old will now play Marinko Matosevic - conqueror of Germany's Benjamin Becker - in his next match.
