Roger Federer withdraws from Rogers Cup

Roger Federer announces that he will not be participating at the Rogers Cup in Toronto this summer in order to rest after Wimbledon.

Roger Federer has announced that he will not participate in the Rogers Cup in Toronto next week.

The 34-year-old has not played since seeing his latest chance to win a record eighth Wimbledon title ended by Milos Raonic in the semi-finals earlier this month.

The two-time Rogers Cup champion has now decided to rest for a while before returning to action for the Olympic Games and US Open.

"I have made the tough decision to withdraw from Rogers Cup. Toronto is one of my favourite events on the calendar and I am disappointed that I won't be able to compete in front of the great tennis fans in Canada," he told the Rogers Cup website.

"Looking ahead, it is best for me that I take more time after Wimbledon."

Federer joins world number two Andy Murray in pulling out of the event.
