Heather Watson loses in Miami Open first round

British number two Heather Watson suffers a straight-sets defeat to Beatriz Haddad Maia in the first round of the Miami Open.

Heather Watson has suffered an early exit from the Miami Open after losing in straight sets to Beatriz Haddad Maia.

The British number two enjoyed an excellent start to the year in Australia, but the 25-year-old has not won a match since losing in the semi-finals in Hobart ahead of the Australian Open.

Watson's winless streak in WTA matches has now been extended to six after losing out 7-6 6-2 to Haddad Maia, who also defeated Watson in Acapulco in February.

The Guernsey-born player did well to take the opening set to a tie-break - which she lost 7-3 - but it was one-way traffic in the second after her Brazilian opponent broke serve at the start of the set.

British number one and defending champion Johanna Konta faces either Kirsten Flipkens or Mihaela Buzarnescu in her opening match later in the week.
