Jo-Wilfried Tsonga edges out Robin Haase at Madrid Open

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga has reached round three of the Madrid Open with a straight-sets victory over Robin Haase.

The French seventh seed squandered a set point at the end of the first but came through the tie-break 7-5 to gain the initiative against his Dutch opponent.

Both players exchanged breaks early in the second before Tsonga won another tie-break 7-2 to seal his progress.

He will now face Spaniard Fernando Verdasco for a spot in the quarter-finals.
