Maria Sharapova overcomes Caroline Wozniacki in three sets to reach the semi-finals of the Madrid Open.

Former world number one Maria Sharapova has booked a place in the semi-finals of the Madrid Open after sealing a 6-1 3-6 6-3 victory over Caroline Wozniacki.

It was a strong start for Sharapova as she broke her opponent's serve at the first time of asking and managed to seal another down the line to take a comfortable one-set lead.

The Russian pro continued her dominance by going a break up instantly in the second set, but Wozniacki immediately responded with a break of her own.

The Dane struck once again to snatch Sharapova's serve and draw level on sets before going a break up early in the third and deciding set.

However, Sharapova was able to recover and claimed two break points before successfully serving for the match.
