Tomas Berdych ousts Jo-Wilfried Tsonga to reach Madrid Open quarter-finals

Tomas Berdych sees off Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in straight sets to grab a quarter-final place in the Madrid Open.

Sixth seed Tomas Berdych has secured a 7-5 6-2 victory over Jo-Wilfried Tsonga to reach the quarter-finals of the Madrid Open.

Games went by the way of serve in the early stages of the first set, but it was Berdych who struck first with a break of serve in the sixth game.

Despite breaking back, Tsonga eventually lost serve again to relinquish the opening set on the clay surface and while Berdych could only land less than half of his first serves, he stayed in control.

Berdych continued his dominance by going a break up in the second set, and Tsonga struggled to respond as the Czech wrapped up proceedings and booked a place in the final eight.
