Agnieszka Radwanska begins season with win over Flavia Pennetta

Agnieszka Radwanska got her season off to a winning start by helping top seeds Poland whitewash Italy on day one of the 2014 Hopman Cup.

World number five Radwanska overcame Flavia Pennetta 6-2 6-2, before Grzegorz Panfil gave the Poles a 2-0 advantage by winning his men's singles match against Andreas Seppi, who retired midway through the second set after losing the first 6-4.

With Seppi unable to take part in the mixed doubles, Poland were awarded a walkover.

Afterwards, Radwanska told reporters: "I didn't have much time to adjust and I only slept for like three hours.

"In Poland it was about five degrees so I was very happy I could play my best tennis, I'm playing alright for the first day here."

Seppi, who is suffering with illness, remains hopeful of being fit to play on Tuesday when Italy face Australia.
