Tsvetana Pironkova beats Angelique Kerber in straight sets to win Sydney International

Pironkova wins Sydney International

Tsvetana Pironkova has won the Sydney International title by beating Angelique Kerber 6-4 6-4 in the final at the Ken Rosewall Arena.

The beginning of the first set was a cagey affair between the two competitors, with games going by the way of serve, but it was Pironkova who just edged it by taking three of a possible eight break points, while Kerber missed two chances to break her opponent.

After moving on top in the opening set, Pironkova was able to hold off her German opponent to take the lead, leaving Kerber with the task of a comeback.

Despite some impressive forehands on the court, Kerber was unable to match Pironkova, who stepped up her game by scoring three aces and winning as many break points.

There were opportunities for Kerber to get back into the contest, but the Italian pro had just enough to see out the clash and take the title.
